The 18th World Championships began yesterday
and the gymnasts are offering us a great show. The FIG received
requests for evaluation for more than 100 new elements and we
discovered them the whole day long.
As I only got the results on paper, I don't have enough time enough
to encode them. They should be available on the FIG and/or the
Gymmedia websites.
The most exiting competition up to now is the mixed pairs one where
after the balance and tempo exercises the difference between the
first (USA) and the second (RUS) place is only 0.07.
The bad surprise comes from China. They presented the most difficult
exercises but their choreographies are so poor that they loose in
artistry what they earn with their difficulty.
The good ones comes from the Belgian men's pair and from the
Australian trio. Since they won an international meet in Ukraine,
Philippe and Kenny prooved us how good they are, their second place
remains however a good surprise.
Even though I knew Yuri Stepchenkov in working in Australia for one
and a half year, their women's trio completely surprised me with an
exellent and original balance exercise. With 17.44, only Russia could
get a higher score. Unfortunately for them, there are no balance and
tempo finals anymore.

From the FIG Flash n°49 : The FIG is

considering the provision of the 2004 event at the first
opportunity.

31st
World Cup Series, Puurs, Belgium :
As I didn't have the opportunity to go to Belgium this year, the following comments are only based on the results found on the World Cup official website www.fiac.be.
First competition day, a bad day for the 2004 vice world champion.
In both categories where the current vice-world
champions are present, they didn't confirmed their status and both the
mens four from Ukraine and the Russian mixed pair are currently in
third. In the Mixed pair event, Anna Kochalova and Revaz Gurgenidze
received a surprising adjusted difficulty score of 8.86 for their
balance exercise. With a total of 26.960, they are more than 1.5 behind
the current leaders Tiffany Cuyt and Yves Vander Donkt from Belgium.
The men's group performed their dynamic exercise. The men's group from
Ukraine received the highst adjusted diffulty score with 9.99 but with
a total score of 27.490, they are currently in third position, behind
the men's groups from Russia and Great Britain. The Brits Barry
Hindson, Stuart McKenzie, Scott Patterson and David Scott are first
with a total score of 27.670.
In the other events, the polish women's pair Magdalena Wegrzynowicz and
Anna Miadzielec, the Men's pair Serhiy Popov and Mykola Shcherbak from
Ukraine and the russian women's group Tatiana Alexeeva, Elena Kirilova
and Elena Moiseeva are leading after the first exercise.
April 2005 :
1st
World Cup Series, Puurs, Belgium : About the difficulty score.
Out of 54 exercises performed in the preliminaries, 8
have a difficulty score of 10.0 or more. Only 2 pairs received such a
difficulty score for both of their exercises. Thet are the belgian
mixed pair Tiffany Cuyt and Yves Vander Donkt and the men's pair from
Ukraine Serhiy Popov and Mykola Shcherbak.
Because of the many restrictions brought by the new code for the
women's groups balance exercise, no trio could perform such an exercise
with a difficulty score of 10 or more. The russian group Magdalena
Wegrzynowicz and Anna Miadzielec, however, was close with a difficulty
score of 9.85. Therefore, no one should be surprised to see such
exercises performed out of 10.0 either during the next World games or
the european championships.
3rd
World Cup Series, Puurs, Belgium : The favorites win the finals.
In the mixed pairs event, Tiffany Cuyt and Yves Vander
Donkt were leading after the preliminaries but surprisingly, they
didn't perform their combined exercise out of 10.0. Just like one month
ago in Vinitsa, they finish second behind the russian Anna Kochalova
and Revaz Gurgenidze. The ukrainian Maryna Shevchuk and Sergiy Pelepets
take the 3rd place.
Russia also takes the first place in the women's group event while
Ukraine wins in the three other events, i.e. women's pairs, men's pairs
and men's groups.

2006 World Championships : organizer wanted
As mentioned on the F.I.G website, the 2005 acrobatic World Cup Final has been cancelled as no bid has been received by the FIG.
Bids for the 2007 world cup final and the 2006 and 2008 World championships were expected at the FIG council held at the end of May. While the british gymnastics federation celebrates its winnig bid for the artistic World Championships of ... 2009, the FIG didn't receive any bid for the hereabove mentioned events.
We really hope the FIG will find a federation willing to organize the next acrobatic World Championships in less than one year from now.
